Painting

Haven't posted much in the way of painting. So here is a study. My plan this summer is to complete (or begin) a large scale narrative oil painting in the manner of some of the Soviet Socialists, Russian impressionists or old illustrators like Harvey Dunn and Cornwell. Those paintings demand attention and the scale allows you to really get in there and slap the paint around. I love to see the paint be the paint. It becomes it's own living, breathing entity, that when viewed in person turns the painting from a nice picture into this monsterous symphony of color and movement!

This painting is 18x14, the head is just under half scale (4 inches tall) of an average human head. So if I was to do a full narrative setting the figures would be about 3 ft tall on the canvas. So you can imagine how large the canvas will be! Whew! If I can pull it off it will be extremely satisfying and fullfilling.

Gesture and Story

Although I can't attend Mr.Gately's wonderful class (for now), I won't let that stop me and I can't contain my enthusiasm for sketching as it relates to Walt Stanchfield and animation. I would eventually like to create a comic and my endeavors into animation drawing are helping me realize that goal. Thinking in terms of story and character are huge! These are recent doodles from a quick sketch workshop at school. I'm working on the storytelling part as there isn't much of that going on here, so little steps in the right direction will have to do for now. But I'm happy with the direction. What do you think?

Below I caught the model on her break and decided she needed to visit the beach!!
