AMPAS show in Beverly Hills

So myself, Sergio , Arnie and Brian headed down to L.A. this past weekend for Nathan Fowkes color workshop which was great! Nathan is an exemplary production artist with lot's of enthusiasm.

We also had the chance to head over to the "The Art of the Motion Picture Illustrator" show at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. Man it was inspiring. Just the kind of stuff I needed to see. William B. Major, Tyrus Wong and Harold Michelson's work was on display. Work from such films as "The Graduate", Cecille B. Demille's "The Ten Commandments", "The Birds" and "Bambi" to name a few.

Major's work (Below) stood out for me. Beautifully simple watercolor set studies. With the glut of over rendered and underwhelming "concept art" these days it's nice to see no nonsense solid design and draftsmanship from veterans of classic cinema. The show runs through Dec 16, so go see it already.

Major has a book coming out I believe. Hans Bacher's book will be out soon as well. Can't wait.

Tyrus Wong's studies for Bambi are so exciting and surprisingly tiny.

Michelson's board and set designs were solid and clear something I admire more and more.

Wow - never even knew this was on .
Missed it ........damn !

Thanks for posting this .
I tend to agree about the stuff today not being as good . These guys were precise , direct and the work always focused on the end goal and not on the pretty rendering .

Inspiring .

Hey everyone I'm glad these were just as exciting for you as they were me.

CCarmen-Hey Chris things are great, having fun and learning the ropes.

Loop-Yeah I'm pretty sure I overheard them mentioning a book.

Brandon-Hey Mia is great! Thanks for stopping by.

Sim-R- Hey Simon you can still catch the show, it runs through Dec.16th.

Don't get me wrong there are some great things going on in film, but it's exciting to see art from non sci-fi/fantasy big budget special effects features. Just solid staging and economic execution.

Really interesting. Did you ever see Ken Adam's production designs? Early Bond movies & his work on Kubrick's Dr.Strangelove are among his most well known. There's a great book on him by Christopher Frayling with a very insightful interview.
